There are reportedly 150,000 vagabond children
in China. Theirs is an existence reliant on trains. From their destitute
village home like Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi, they hitchhike to cities
near and far and make their living at train stations, scavenging,
shining shoes, selling flowers and tidbits. They have not run away
from home. Most if not all of them roam the country with the blessings
of their parents. And they seem to be happy, for they make more
in a month than their adults at home earn in a year. The issue of
vagabond children in China is therefore much more than a juvenile
problem.
