This week World Vibes has a special musical theme on offer. The entire two hour show is dedicated to our musical tribute to recently deceased French singer-songwriter, actor and writer Jacques Higelin, who passed away just two weeks ago. We play some of his greatest and little known hits from his six decade long recording career, some of the greatest song ever ! Click on ‘World Vibes’ above for more details.
Our first hour starts with early recordings from Jacques Higelin, born outside of Paris on the 18th October 1940 and who passed away last 6th April at the age of 77. He was buried at the Père-Lachaise cemetery last Thursday 12 April. Originally starting a career as an actor, he met fellow thespian-musicians who taught him how to play, compose and perform which lead to his first recordings of Boris Vian covers and as a guest for Brigitte Fontaine, before he recorded his first solo albums in the late 60’s. Very much imbued with the recent Mai ’68 Paris student riots, his music was experimental, spontaneous and infused with his unique brand of ‘stream-of-consciousness’ live recordings, especially with his second album ‘Jacques ‘Crabouif’ Higelin’. Come the 70’s and he turns full Rock. His albums ‘BBH 75’, ‘Irradié’ and ‘Allertez les bébés !’ bring him wide acclaim, succes and awards ! We end the first hour with the title track of that album. Fascinating and inspiring music for young and old, enjoy !
Our second hour continues our musical tribute to Jacques Higelin who is by the late 70’s in the mist successful period of his career and develops his reputation as both ‘the crazy singer’ and the ‘singer of the left’ for his support of causes for the people and leftist candidates, of which François Mitterand. His songs would on occasion be banned on the radio. He resumes his acting career, released a book of letters he write during conscription, pruduces theatre and composes for movies. His albums during the 80’s are some of his best, especially ‘Ai’ and ‘Tombé du ciel’. The later provided interesting Theme tunes for the presenter. Come the 90’s and Higelin is in his 50’s, takes a more serious turn in his music, which continues in the 00’s and 10’s, where his last album of 2016 ‘Higelin 75’ harks back to an early album of 1975, here he is 75 years old ! He had just released his autobiography ‘Je vis pas ma vie, je la rêve’ (I don’t live my life, I dream it). His three children are also artists in their own right, in their own fields. Music of a lifetime for all, enjoy !
