    德国耶拿大学的科学家正尝试利用一部高速X光机,探究行走的秘密。他们透视了一系列动物,包括美洲鬣蜥、雀鸟、老鼠。X光穿过它们的皮毛,呈现出底下每一条骨头的动作。为的是解答这些问题:三亿年前,地球上第一批陆地生物的行走方式,是怎样演化成现代人今天多坐少动、移动能力衰退的呢?人类和人科动物直立行走的方式又是否完全一致?惟有研究生物的移动方法,看到骨头、肌腱及肌肉之间复杂的互动,才能揭开大自然进化的奥秘。

    Scientists at the University of Jena are attempting to discover the secrets of movement using a high-speed X-ray machine. The scientists have taken a wide range of animals, from iguanas to birds to rats, into the lab to see through their skin to the movement of each individual bone underneath, all with one major question in mind: how did the mechanics of movement develop from the first land animals 300 million years ago to the atrophied mobility of the modern office worker today? Is the upright gait of man same as that of our closest relatives, the hominids? It is only in movement that the sophisticated interplay of bones, tendons and muscles that nature has perfected over the course of evolution is revealed.

      Tuberculosis seems to have been wiped out – but now the epidemic is returning with a vengeance. According to the World Health Organization, there are ten million new cases reported globally per year. Not only veterans who have been infected are having recurring episodes, tourists and business travelers are seeking help as well. Refugees might also carry the disease abroad from their homeland where tuberculosis is rife. But it has been decades since tuberculosis broke out last time, and there are not many medical experts and facilities in this field today. How are the hospitals and health authorities coping with the challenges? How are those affected dealing with the exhausting treatments? More than 100 years after the discovery of tuberculosis, the battle against the illness begins anew.

      试想像世界上有些超级植物,表面看似正常,实则有着超能力,可以帮助人类解决环境污染、原材料短缺、贫穷等问题。这种超级植物确实存在!「超累积植物」会在叶子里储存大量重金属,足以用来净化土壤,有些甚至可以提取出金属。在南海的新喀里多尼亚岛上,一种不起眼的植物Phyllanthus balgooyi,居然可以修补露天采矿在土地留下的伤痕。另一边厢,阿尔巴尼亚的农民则首次栽种蕴含镍的植物。这种一直被他们视为无用的杂草,现在竟成为农民的生计来源。

      Just imagine there were “superplants”. Plants that are quite normal in appearance but possess almost magical abilities. Little plants, which could help us mitigate problems like environmental pollution, shortages of raw materials and poverty. And these superplants do exist! Hyperaccumulators are plants that store so many heavy metals in their leaves that can decontaminate soil. Others can even be used to gather the accumulated raw materials. In the jungle of the South Sea paradise of New Caledonia, open-cast nickel mining has left huge scars in the landscape. Phyllanthus balgooyi, an unremarkable little plant, helps scientists restore this contaminated wasteland. Meanwhile in Albania, farmers are purposely harvesting nickel-accumulating plants for the first time. Plants that have been regarded as useless weed, can now open up new ways of sustenance for them.

      Water. Turn on the faucet and it is always there. Without it we perish. But how safe is tap water? In this episode, we investigate what happened in Flint, Michigan when local officials changed the city’s water source to save money, but overlooked a critical treatment process. As the water pipes corroded, lead leached into the system, exposing the community—including thousands of children—to dangerous levels of poison. Ordinary citizens and independent scientists exposed the danger lurking in Flint’s water and confronted those who turned a blind eye. Join us as we uncover the science behind this manmade disaster—from the intricacies of water chemistry, to the biology of lead poisoning, to the misuse of science itself. Still, there is a disturbing truth that reaches far beyond Flint. How can we protect ourselves from poisoned water?

      In 2006, ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff was critically injured while covering the war in Iraq and was saved by the advances in military medical care. In this documentary, he will cover military medical advances and technology from the battlefield to the return home and the journey of rehabilitation. Woodruff takes viewers inside laboratories, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers, where scientists are making artificial arms with life-like responses, 3D printing new organs, adding robotic arms to wheelchairs, and giving damaged legs new strength. Woven throughout the documentary are the personal accounts from veterans and their families who share how medical advances are both saving and changing their lives.

      In the last episode, Dr Helen Czerski explored how sounds were created. This time, she discovers how we hear and use sounds. She finds out that early land based creatures went through nearly magical evolution to hear sounds, and that our hearing ability employs simple but effective physical principles. With sounds, animals can locate their prey and detect danger. Mankind has also come to learn usng sounds to explore historical sites underwater and even distant planets in the outer solar system.

      In this programme, Dr Helen Czerski investigates the extraordinary science behind the sounds we are familiar with and the sounds that we normally cannot hear. She begins by exploring the simplest of ideas: what is a sound? At the Palace of Westminster, Helen carries out measurements using lasers to reveal how the most famous bell in the world - "Big Ben" produces its distinct sound. With soprano singer Lesley Garrett CBE, Helen explores the secrets of human singing voice that can produce a range of sounds far greater than any man-made musical instrument. She also discovers the hidden world of sounds that lie beyond the range of human hearing at the summit of Stromboli, one of Europe's most active volcanoes.

      For decades, some have suspected that there might be others out there, intelligent beings capable of communicating with us, even visiting our world. It might sound like science fiction, but today scientists from across the globe are scouring the universe for signals from extraterrestrials. In 2006, astronomers discovered an enigmatic signal from space, known as a fast radio burst. Explanations ranged from colliding neutron stars to communication signals from an extremely advanced civilisation. On the other hand, researchers have been devoting much of their time searching for radio signals from Tabby's Star, the most mysterious star in our galaxy.       With 3D printing being more and more common and developed, will there be another industrial revolution? Nowadays, you can print what you need, for example, shoes, or even a prosthesis, on your own using open source blueprints from the internet, or have them tailor-made by 3D printing professionals at an affordable price. Does this mean globalisation is coming to an end?
