Riot police fired tear gas at people who gathered at Tseung Kwan O on Saturday evening to commemorate the death of a student who died during the anti-government protests in November.

Officers raised a flag to warn the crowd that they were taking part in an illegal assembly and pepper sprayed some people who attempted to block roads in the area.

They intercepted a number of young people and subdued at least one at a nearby bus terminal.

A number of journalists were also pepper sprayed.

Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), student Chow Tsz-lok died on November 8 after falling from a car park in Tseung Kwan O during a police operation to clear the area.

Chow's death is the first many people have directly linked to police action against the anti-government protesters. Police deny they had anything to do with his fall.
