More than 60 police supporters have protested outside the government headquarters in Tamar, demanding the closure of RTHK.

Members of the "Alliance in Support of Our Police Force" chanted slogans, calling the public broadcaster a white elephant project that's more toxic than the new coronavirus, while accusing it of promoting hatred and rebelling against Beijing.

They especially took issue with RTHK's satirical show – Headliner – which they claimed "smeared" the police force's work amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The police force had earlier written a letter to the head of the broadcaster, Director of Broadcasting Leung Ka-wing, expressing regret that the show's February 14 episode had implied that the force was stockpiling protective supplies.

A RTHK spokesman had defended the satirical show, saying it reflects the different views on what's going on in the society.

Meanwhile a government official said on Tuesday that the Office of the Communications Authority has received more than 200 complaints about the programme since February 15.

The official also said the "Radio Television Hong Kong Charter" stipulates that the broadcaster’s editorial guidelines require content to be accurate and balanced, and the station should fully implement this.

He also said the authority is following up on the complaints.
