 Retail sales and industrial output in China missed economists’ forecasts in August, suggesting the mainland economy slowed further last month, with growth hit by the spread of the Delta variant and adverse weather conditions. Retail sales in August slowed sharply, rising just 2.5% y/y compared to 8.5% in July, and economists’ forecasts of growth of 7%. Industrial output last month slowed to 5.3% y/y from 6.4% in July, missing expectations of 5.8%.


Bloomberg News is reporting that Chinese authorities have told major lenders that China Evergrande will default on its interest payments due on bank loans next week. The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development told banks in a meeting this week that Evergrande won’t be able to pay its debt obligations due on September 20, and instead most of Evergrande’s working capital is now being used to resume construction on existing projects.
