Hong Kong's friendliness to people with disabilities / BOCHK Science and Innovation Prize / Operation Santa Claus 2024

On Wednesday’s Backchat, we’re talking about Hong Kong’s friendliness to people with disabilities.

This comes as Paralympic athlete Ho Yuen-kei was barred from entering a Causeway Bay restaurant, after being told that her wheelchair could obstruct other patrons. The eatery’s management later apologized, promising to offer more disability awareness training to its staff.
Rights’ groups have called on the Equal Opportunities’ Commission to enhance anti-discrimination education, adding that it was not the first time a disabled person had been denied service in Hong Kong.
Last July, two visually impaired passengers were required to leave a Tokyo-bound flight after staff were unsure whether the pair could travel unaccompanied.
Have you or a loved one ever been denied service on the ground of disability? And how can we make Hong Kong more accessible to the disabled?
After 9:30, we speak to the organisers of the BOCHK Science and Innovation Prize 2024.
And after 9:45, RTHK’s Jim Gould joins us to talk about Operation Santa Claus 2024.

Hong Kong's new garbage bins and recycling subsidies / Hong Kong's falling rankings in reading

    主持人:Danny Gittings and Paul Zimmerman

On Thursday’s Backchat, we’re discussing recycling after an audit report found that recycling firms applying for the government subsidies may need to wait 18 months for approval.

Critics say this long delay may make it difficult for embattled recyclers to stay afloat.
The government also plans to phase out roadside recycling bins and give orange rubbish bins a facelift. The new style rubbish bins will have a smaller opening to try and stop people using them to throw away large items.
So what we can do to help the local recycling industry? Will the new rubbish bins achieve their purpose? Or will people just dump their garbage directly on the streets instead.
After 9:45, we talk about Hong Kong’s falling rankings in reading.

    9:05am-9:45am: Recycling

9:05-9:45am: Kenny Lam, Coordinator, Love Recycling Plus
9:15am-9:30am: Beatrice Siu, Senior Public Affairs Officer, Greeners Action
9:30am-9:45am: Shan Shan Chung, Programme Director, MSc in Environment and Public Health, Hong Kong Baptist University

9:45am-10:00am: Hong Kong's falling rankings in reading

9:45am-10:00am: Edward Vickers, Professor of Comparative Education, Kyushu University (Japan)
