The future of EU-US cooperation / Successful heart transplant on eight-month-old

On Wednesday's Backchat, we’re looking into the future of relations between the European Union and the United States.

US Vice President JD Vance came under fire by critics for downplaying Russia’s “threat” to European stability, blaming instead what he describes as “threats from within.”
In a fiery speech at the Munich Security Conference last weekend, the number two in charge accused his European allies – including the UK – of “backsliding” free speech and democracy. He also went on to criticise domestic policies ranging from immigration to abortion, with little mention of regional security.
Shortly after, Donald Trump's Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg said that the EU would not take part in ongoing talks to end the war in Ukraine, prompting European leaders – including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer – to join a crisis summit.
Has JD Vance’s speech marked a turning point in EU-US relations? Is this the beginning of a new era for transatlantic cooperation? We’ll ask the experts.
After 9:50, we learn more about the complexity of organ transplant procedures on babies, after an eight-month-old successfully received her new heart.

China's third plenum meeting / HKDSE results

    主持人:Danny Gittings and Mike Rowse

On Thursday's Backchat, we're talking about China's third plenum.

Chaired by President Xi Jinping, this important Communist Party meeting is reported to have been considering draft decisions on modernisation and economic reform. The meeting comes as China’s second quarter GDP growth fell to 4.7%, below the expected 5.1%.
This has been partly blamed on weak consumer demand and US and European export curbs. Businesses are hoping to see more stimulus injected into the economy, but finance authorities have erred on the side of caution and warned earlier this year that such measures could pose long-term risks.
So what should we expect from this meeting?
After 9:45, we speak to three top DSE students.

    9:05am-9:45am: China's third plenum meeting

9:05am-9:30am: Josef Gregory Mahoney, Professor in Politics and International Relations, East China Normal University (Shanghai)
