Kenny Wen, Head of Investment Strategy at KGI Asia, says while weakness in the Japanese yen may be a surprise for investors, there are a few reasons behind it, including dovish sentiment from the BOJ and uncertainty over the outlook for hikes from the US Federal Reserve. Adam Dawes, Senior Investment Adviser at Shaw and Partners, says he’s seeing a lot of net short positions on the yen, which means many are looking for further weakness to come.

Neil Newman, Investment Strategist at Japanmacro.com, says the element of surprise had gone by the time the BOJ hiked rates, and since it only took a baby step, with other central banks on hold, the interest rate differential remained very similar. He goes on to look at the potential for intervention on the yen, saying that could happen over Easter if we see 152 on the currency against the US dollar.
