This month’s Ballet’s Ballade on Sunday mornings continue to explore the development of the beautiful art form during its golden period – its classical era, which corresponds roughly to the romantic period in western classical music.  From Sunday 2 July, we delve further into the magic of the three great Tchaikovsky ballets, Glazunov’s Raymonda and Les Sylphides, and Delibes’ Sylvia, looking at how new composition techniques, new pointe shoes, outstanding players (legendary violinist Leopold Auer) helped shape music for ballets.  Then we follow the reciprocal flow of Russian dancers, choreographers and composers to the West, to Paris in particular, and pick some highlights from the repertoire of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.  This company revolutionised modern ballet as it promoted ground-breaking artistic collaborations among young choreographers, composers, designers, and dancers, all at the forefront of their fields.  Works were commissioned from composers like Stravinsky, Debussy, Prokofiev, Satie, and Ravel, artists such as Kandinsky, Benois, Picasso, and Matisse, and costume designers Léon Bakst and Coco Chanel.  (Did you know, Pierre Cardin travelled all the way to Russia to provide costumes for the ballet Anna Karenina too!) And finally, some modern productions such as Alice in Wonderland and Mozart’s Mass in C minor, and excerpts of Chinese ballets. As always, join us to find out more!
