To many, Maurice Ravel is the sound of the turn of the century.
Ravel for his part was fascinated by the popular music of the age, most notably A merican jazz, and spent a few nights of his singular A merican tour with Gershwin in Harlem jazz clubs absorbing what he could of the ‘music of the future’. Ravel stood with one foot in the popular and one in the classical, even having been commissioned to write songs for a film version of Don Quixote, a project which never came to fruition in part due to his ill health. Perhaps this is why Ravel ’s music is more popular today than it has ever been – it was and always will be popular, ever-fresh.
