It was 25 years ago that the Portuguese colony
of Angola in Africa became an independent nation. To this day, civil
war has never stopped. Angola, richly
endowed by nature with oil and diamonds, should be one of the wealthiest
African states, but is one of the ten poorest countries in the world,
a victim of politics.
Despite an international embargo on the diamond
output, there are channels for the precious stones to be smuggled
out of Angola. Diamonds, like oil, are exchanged for weapons for
Angolans to kill Angolans and there is no shortage of deadly supplies
from the United States, Russia and China.
In a seemingly incessant war, there is scant
regard for human lives. Volunteering their much-needed services
to the war-ravaged country are the famed Medecins Sans Frontieres.
One of them is Dr. Cheng. Dr. Cheng was the professor of paediatrics
and surgery at the University of Hong Kong. Leaving his comfortable
life in Hong Kong behind, he is in Angola... to use his own words...
to do something meaningful.
