In China, no life is to live without politics.
A 12-year-old Beijing girl, Zhang Yun-wei's parents were once two
of the many intellectual youths in the Cultural Revolution. They
were married on the 9th of September, also the day Chairman Mao
died.
Although Yun-wei's parents were disillusioned
in the Cultural Revolution, they found some virtues other than the
dark side of it. They brought her back to the farm in Inner Mongolia
where they had their re-education. They wanted her to share their
feelings and experience how bitter life there could be. So when
they are putting stones on her shoulders, especially in her studies,
she can have the strength to endure.
What's the feeling of Yun-wei herself you
might ask? She is understanding. She is cooperating. But she is
unwilling to accept. Her heart is throbbing to take fresh air outside
China.
