Audio - Sun u-law (.au)
Most workstations have their own programs to play .au files. For example, in an SGI Indy, sfplay can be used.

Audio - RealAudio (.ra/.ram)
RealAudio player for SGI/IRIX 5.3 is now available, other unix version is coming. You can find details and information from Progressive Network.

Audio - MPEG Audio (.mp2)
Source code for Maplay is available, or you may want to get further information from IUMA.

Audio - GSM Compressed Sun u-law (.au.gsm)
You can decompress the file using gsm-1.0.7, and then play it with an .au player.

Video - QuickTime (.mov)
Xanim can be used to play QuickTime video and audio now.

The following lines should be added to the .mailcap file in your home directory in order to launch the apps from Mosaic or Netscape.

audio/x-mpeg;    <path of app>/maplay

Audio - Sun u-law (.au)
WPLANY can play seamlessly while you perform other tasks, but does not have a control bar.

Audio - RealAudio (.ra/.ram)
Files with the .ra extensions will be downloaded and then played from the harddisk. Files with the .ram extensions will be played while downloading. Files with an RA288 icon can only be played by RealAudio player 2.0. Please download the RealAudio player from www.realaudio.com

Audio - GSM Compressed Sun u-law (.au.gsm)
Sorry, I cannot find a GSM decompressor that works in DOS.

Video - QuickTime (.mov)
QuickTime 2.1.1 for Windows will let you use Media Player to play QuickTime video.

Modify the INI files (mosaic.ini, netscape.ini or others, depending on the viewer you used).

Mosaic.ini (change the type number, program name and path according to your environment)

You can use MacGSM for decompression, then use Sound Machine to play .au file.

Video - QuickTime (.mov)
QuickTime 2.1.

Configure the helper applications in the Preferences dialog (for Mosaic and Netscape). Add three new Mime (document) types (if not already there):

  • Mime type/Subtype: audio/x-mpeg, audio/basic and video/quicktime
  • Extensions: mp2, au and mov
  • Application: select the corresponding player
