The “World’s second largest film industry” (UNESCO) is called Nollywood and is located in Lagos, Nigeria. Nollywood is known for fast-paced, low-budget productions with unorthodox aesthetics. But in recent years fresh movement came into the industry. Multiplex cinemas are opening up in Africa’s growing mega-cities and the internet enables worldwide distribution. The opportunities in the blooming industry attract unique characters to Lagos. There is a young investor from Berlin, co-founder of the biggest Nollywood streaming service, and there is a young director striving for an intellectual cinematic movement made in Nigeria.

Prue Leith has been a household name since the 1970s. 45 years ago she made, what was for the time, the radical decision to adopt a Cambodian baby, Li-Da. Prue gave Li-Da an idyllic English upbringing at her Cotswolds home and, by her own admission, rarely questioned whether she could have helped Li-Da connect more with her Cambodian roots. Now in this intimate and revealing film Prue and Li-Da travel to Cambodia to search for her biological family. Social media and DNA testing are allowing thousands of children who, like Li-Da, were evacuated just before Pol Pot’s genocide to reconnect with lost relatives. For Prue, as she approaches 80, there may not be many more chances to make this journey. And for Li-Da this is her chance to help Prue understand why it’s so important to explore her heritage. What neither of them can predict is how they will react should they find what they are looking for.

The number of climate refugees is rising - and yet the status of ‘climate refugee’ has yet to be officially recognized by national or international law. One factor is illustrative of the devastating impact of climate change on countries and communities: water. Recent years have seen an increasing number of floods and droughts. A third of the global population lives near the coast, and an estimated 700 million people are facing rising sea levels. In the Philippines more than 85 percent of the population say they are feeling the impact of climate change in the rising frequency of flooding and violent typhoons. Farmers in the highlands of Guatemala, on the other hand, are suffering extreme drought. Both water scarcity and flooding are sparking mass migration.

What do tomatoes have to do with mass migration? Tomatoes are a poker chip in global trade policies. Subsidized products from the EU, China and elsewhere are sold at dumping prices, destroying markets and livelihoods in Africa in the process. Desperate farmers find themselves having to seek work elsewhere, including in Europe. In the surrounding region, the market for tomatoes has collapsed and most farmers are no longer growing what could easily be Ghana’s ‘red gold’. An agricultural advisor is trying to help local tomato farmers, but has little by way of hope to offer. Conditions like this are what drive local farmers to cut their losses and head for Europe. Once in Italy, migrants from Ghana and other African countries are forced to live in desperate conditions near the plantations.

Venezuela is experiencing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and it is now the world’s second largest refugee crisis after Syria. Hunger is widespread and there is a severe shortage of medicines. The UN estimates that more than four million people have now fled what was once South America’s richest nation. But unlike Syria, Venezuela is not mired in civil war, and the country is sitting on the world’s largest proven oil reserves. How could such a rich nation be driven into ruin? Where has the country’s wealth gone, and why are its people starving? Corruption, deindustrialization, debt, political conflict, authoritarianism and poverty are the order in Venezuela today, driving displacement worldwide.

Smoking is completely prohibited in public spaces and in most restaurants at least in the western world. Despite the decrease in the number of smokers in the west, the tobacco industry has not given up! New electronic products like the e-cigarette and the tobacco heater are thrown on the market. Colorful advertising campaigns sell the illusion of the new smoking: It is cool, it doesn't stink and it doesn't make you sick. But are these promises of the industry true? A new study seems to prove that like the tobacco cigarette, the new electronic products contain the nerve poison nicotine - and that makes you addicted and, above all, sick. Also new lung diseases like Evali cloud the picture of healthy smoking.
The products are evolving but the strategies remain the same; how does this industry continue to make profits without any consideration for health?

Around the world, hundreds of millions of people are living in lockdown in a bid to keep the spread of coronavirus under control. Governments have had no choice but to put a freeze on entire economies, restrict our freedom of movement and transform everything we had previously taken for granted as normal. Now, what we all want to know, is when will lockdown end? In this film, Dr Xand van Tulleken (who has worked for the WHO and has a masters degree in Public Health from Harvard) explores why the lockdown is continuing. He also seeks answers to the questions many of us have about when it will end – and what the world will be like when it does end.
