Deep under Antarctica’s blanket of ice lies traces of a lost world of Dinosaurs and pre-historic creatures. Great forests once covered the now frozen Antarctic continent; gargantuan Titanosaurs roamed its valleys, and proto-mammals darted through the undergrowth. It was also home to the largest carnivore of its day, the Cryolophosaurus – Antarctica’s T-Rex.
This 2-part series follows paleontologists on a journey of exploration to uncover fossil evidence of these ancient animals and plants that once thrived here. Their quest is also to unravel the mysteries of how these creatures survived in a land located in the polar circle where its dark for 4 months a year.

In the second of two episodes, the expedition continues apace. We find out how the great discovery in the 1990s of the Cryolophosaurus, dubbed the T-Rex of Antarctica, and a 25-foot-long plant eater, the Glacialisaurus, lead to a renewed interest in a continent that was once thought to be largely devoid of life. And reveal how new evidence that a tough proto-mammal, Lystrosaurus, may have hibernated to survive dark polar winters and toxic climate upheaval; and, ultimately, reveal what happened to the Antarctic dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures after the infamous asteroid struck the earth 66 million years ago.

In the first Episode, the new expedition to the ice continent of Antarctica begins. Scientists arrive at their camp on Shackleton glacier, located in the Transantarctic mountains, to begin their 6 weeklong dig. Excavating in the Permian-Triassic geologic zone, we learn how a proto-mammal, Lystrosaurus, survived a massive extinction event, 252 Mya that killed off most creatures around the world. And how giant carnivorous amphibians may have dominated Antarctica after this momentous event. The expedition’s paleobotanist also reveals clues to a great mystery: how the lost polar forests may have survived without photosynthesis for 4 months every year.
