Who hasn’t dreamed of visiting Tikal, one of the most sumptuous Mayan city-states with its pyramid temples built in a matter of years and its legendary kings? Set deep in the jungle of Petén, Guatemala, Tikal dominated Mayan civilization for centuries. Over the course of fratricidal wars and alliances with the powerful Teotihuacan civilization, the city grew to a population of three or four million. Nevertheless, Tikal was abruptly abandoned in the 10th century. Today, new technology and recent discoveries shed light on its glory and the architectural accomplishments of the Maya. How could this people, with a mastery of neither iron nor pack animals, manage to erect such majestic monuments? How did the Mayans build such a city in a particularly hostile environment? And what caused their decline?
An exploration of the mysterious world of Tikal, the most bewitching Mayan city, from its expansion until its downfall.
