In 2014, the unexpected reappearance of free-ranging beavers in England, after 500 years of extinction in the wild, sparked widespread media attention. The public was divided: conservationists hailed the beavers’ return as a boost for biodiversity, while farmers feared agricultural damage and demanded their recapture.

The Devon Wildlife Trust launched a five-year study to demonstrate the beavers’ environmental benefits. The research confirmed that beavers, as “eco-engineers,” enhance biodiversity, purify water, and reduce flooding. However, despite these findings, concerns from farmers and their lobbying efforts raise questions about whether the scientific evidence will influence future decisions regarding the beavers’ fate.

The programme shows how something that was long thought impossible has been brought about: the return of the tropical forests and their inhabitants.
