Nestled in Kazakhstan’s mountains, Kaindy Lake, formed by a landslide, has submerged a spruce forest for over a century. The ghostly trunks stands in the middle of electric blue water and are cloaked in enigmatic algae, hinting at a unique underwater ecosystem.
Since 2007, the lake and its surrounding forests have been protected within a national park, which aims to protect wildlife from hunting and promoting sustainable tourism. Conservation efforts have revived populations of deer, ibex, and small mammals, luring back large predators such as wolves, bears, lynx, and elusive snow leopards. However, rapid glacier melting endangers this fragile balance.
