The first major chapters of our evolution take us back to a distant past when our ancestors lived in the oceans. It's in the water that are born the organs that allow us today to see, touch, or reproduce. Throughout this exploration, surprising discoveries emerge. Our eye is very similar to that of the lamprey, the oldest jawless vertebrate still alive. The gills of cartilaginous fish such as sharks and rays would be the precursors of our members. Coitus was born in the water over 300 million years ago, invented by the placoderms, curious armored fish.

All genes have "switches" that turn on and off in response to environmental stimuli. They play a role in preventing cancer or obesity, determining an individual's abilities in retaining memory, or even whether a person has musical talent. Controlling these switches may be possible. This episode delves into the latest research in a realm that could change our lives.

The genes that have been analyzed to date account for only 2% of our entire DNA. The remaining 98% was considered useless -- until now. Why is it that some people don't succumb to certain diseases? Or why are certain people able to dive underwater for super-human lengths of time? The latest research into this largely uncharted territory shows that some of our so-called "junk DNA" may even unlock the secrets of evolution.

Artificial intelligence is beginning to achieve remarkable results in predicting the future, a feat deemed beyond the reach of the most advanced sciences. In the 2018 floods in southwestern Japan, timely and accurate rain forecasts led to swift and life-saving evacuations. In the U.S., AI modeling is helping to lower crime rates, but not without public backlash. In medicine, AI now methodically gauges the life expectancy of heart patients. Implementation is accelerating, but what does this mean for each of us, and for society as a whole?

From bartending to hotel room deliveries and fruit picking, robots equipped with artificial intelligence are making inroads into workplaces around the world. Some experts say that by 2030, robots will have taken over 30% of the work now done by humans. That could undermine one of the basic tenets of capitalism -- the promise that if you work hard, you will have a better life. In our program, we question whether the human race will be able to create a new form of capitalism that allows people to coexist with automation technologies.

We may be witnessing the dawn of a bold new era of human activity in space for science and exploration—but also for profit. An explosion of private companies are developing new technologies and lowering costs to bring space closer than ever. And at the same time, NASA is returning to manned spaceflight with gusto—once again building a rocket to take us far beyond Earth—a rocket more powerful even than the storied Saturn V. But this is not the first time we’ve seen signs of a rocketry renaissance. In the 1980s, there was a boom—and bust—in the privatization of space travel. Will today’s optimism over companies like SpaceX and Virgin Galactic prove prescient, or nothing more than hype and wishful thinking? One thing is certain: As costs come down and new rockets with new capabilities come online, a new generation is reaching for the cosmos, once more daring to dream big, and yearning to go farther, in greater numbers than ever before.

By coming out of the water, our ancestors opened a new chapter of our evolution. It's on land that the organs that allow us today to hear, think or manipulate developed.
Throughout this exploration, surprising discoveries emerge. Bones that permitted our reptilian ancestors to chew today allow us to hear. Our hand proportions are very similar to those of primates that lived 18 million years ago. Finally, 40,000 years ago, Neanderthals had a larger brain than ours.
