Episode 7: Lok-ping Chau / Raymond Young / Crystal Lam / Karl Lo
Beethoven has had a profound impact on the world, earning him the title of "maestro of the classical music realm." By listening to his works, one can sense his unwavering determination and gain a positive outlook on life.
In this joint production by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Radio Television Hong Kong, 32 virtuoso pianists take you on a journey to meet Beethoven with piano.

- Piano Sonata No. 16 in G, Op. 31, No. 1, 1st movement: Allegro vivace (Lok-ping Chau)
- Piano Sonata No. 17 in D minor, Op. 31, No. 2, ‘The Tempest’, 1st movement: Largo - Allegro (Raymond Young)
- Piano Sonata No. 18 in E flat, Op. 31, No .3, 4th movement: Presto con fuoco (Crystal Lam)
- Piano Sonata No. 22 in F, Op. 54, 1st movement: In tempo d'un menuetto (Karl Lo)
Lok-ping Chau is passionate about performing and education, actively participating in masterclasses and performances locally and internationally. In 2019, she was awarded the Honorary Artists of the Foshan Grand Theatre . She currently teaches piano duo at the University of Hong Kong’s School of Professional and Continuing Education. She recently established the Hong Kong Piano Duo Association to promote more piano chamber music.
Raymond Young pursued further studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in Austria. He has also participated in the Rome International Piano Competition in Italy, where he received the First Prize in the two-piano duo category and the Silver Prize in the four-hand duo category. He has performed at the Braunschweig Classix Festival in Germany and was awarded the ‘Förderpreis ’ for his outstanding performances.
Crystal Lam obtained a bachelor’s degree with First Class Honors from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She has won awards in various international and local piano competitions, including the Music Teacher National Association Piano Young Artist in the United States, where she became the champion of the Kansas and Midwest regions and placed third nationally. She currently teaches at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Karl Lo attended the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Oberlin Conservatory of Music , and the Cleveland Institute of Music , majoring in piano performance. He is the first young Chinese pianist to perform the complete sets of piano sonatas by Beethoven and Schubert in the United States and Canada.
