Just two more legs remain. After starting the race 41 days ago on Canada’s Pacific coast, the teams now have the Atlantic within their reach - lapping the shores of the seventh checkpoint at the seaside town of Liverpool, Nova Scotia. To reach it they’ll be heading through the Maritimes – New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia – Canada’s three smallest, and famously friendliest, provinces.

To keep their lead, Zainib and Mobeen aim to test the local hospitality to the limit but a trip to catch a naturally occurring phenomenon - on a sinking raft on the highest tide in the world - may derail all their hard work.

Claudia and her dad Kevin are running on fumes and, with costly taxis out of the question, need emergency surgery to mend their ailing budget in order to stay in the race. But a bad start – where they end up spending money to go backwards - makes their challenge even more difficult and in desperate need of some luck to dig them out of a big hole.

After faltering in the last leg and dropping into last place, the stress of the race is beginning to get to best-friends Tricia and Cathie. Can they mend their differences and get themselves back into a strong position in time for the final push to the finish line?

A string of failed attempts to hitchhike shines a light on the obstacles Monique and Ladi face. The only team remaining to have not won a leg, it’s now or never if they are going to turn themselves into genuine contenders.

As the finish line draws ever closer, the teams have to battle fog, torrential rain and the spotty Canadian transport system to gain an advantage. But only one can be first and one step closer to the all-important £20,000 cash prize. The thrilling unpredictability of the race is sure to change the teams lives forever. The Race Across the World is about to reach its climax.

For the sixth leg of the race, the pairs must brush up on their language skills as the next stop is at the heart of French-speaking Canada, the capital of its largest province, Quebec.

To get there, the teams must navigate through Canada’s most densely inhabited region, the big cities here make up a third of the nation’s entire population. For the first time in the race, transport and accommodation choices will be plentiful - but potentially damaging for dwindling budgets.

Either way, they’ll be challenged even further when they join the tourist trail from Montreal to the checkpoint where they will soon discover that with Formula 1 in town, prices and demand for accommodation is driven even higher – and undoubtedly will take a toll on all of the pairs’ finances.

It’s the halfway point in the race across Canada. As the teams take to the ice flows of Hudson Bay, they cross from the province of Manitoba to territory of Nunavut, an area the size of Western Europe, inhabited by the Inuit. The ice is a hunting ground for seals and the polar bears who like to feed on them, it is also a favourite summer holiday spot for beluga whales.
The next leg will take them from the edge of the Arctic to the shore of the Great Lakes – to the fifth checkpoint over 3,000 kilometres away on Manitoulin Island. Situated in Lake Huron, it is the largest Freshwater Island on the planet and is vast enough to contain over a hundred inland lakes itself.
The race is on but the pairs only have one way out of Churchill – a noisy overnight train south. Then, it’s another sleepless night in two buses from hell as they join the road network towards the checkpoint. This single, gruelling stretch of highway – taking them into Ontario and skirting the Great Lakes - has limited transport options and the teams will need ingenuity as well as stamina to gain the advantage, in what could be the tightest leg so far.

    • Episode 4

Five teams have been set the challenge to race across the breadth of Canada, passing through seven checkpoints, taking them from the Pacific coastline to the edge of the Arctic and the shores of the Great Lakes, ending up at their final destination on the Atlantic Ocean, St. John’s on the island of Newfoundland, the most easterly town in North America. A £20,000 cash prize is at stake.
The remaining pairs must now navigate to the fourth checkpoint, the remote outpost of Churchill, where polar bears can outnumber people. On Hudson Bay, at the edge of the Arctic, Churchill is not connected to the rest of Canada by road but by a twice-weekly train, and the teams have just three days to catch it. It’s a journey that will take them from Alberta’s major cities of Calgary and Edmonton, before the Rockies make way for Saskatchewan’s great prairies and badlands.
One team makes their first major mistake of the race trying to get to Calgary - they’ll need to make a race-changing decision to get to the train in time. Looking for a classic cowboy experience, heading through the classic western movie landscape of southern Saskatchewan, another team encounters a family of missionaries that makes them question their reasons for running the race. And one racer learns more than they bargained for before a bear blocks their path to the train, putting their race in jeopardy.
As the train makes its way from Winnipeg to Churchill, the teams need to work out where they can catch it. With the clock ticking, every decision counts for the racers, as they work together once again to reach that all-important checkpoint to be one step closer to the finish line and the £20,000 cash prize.
The thrilling unpredictability of the race is sure to change the teams lives forever. The Race Across the World continues.

The race to St. John’s is underway as the five pairs leave the gold rush boom town of Dawson City and head south to the third checkpoint, 2700km away in the province of Alberta - the picturesque resort town of Banff. Perched in the Rocky Mountains 4500ft above sea level, Banff is the highest town in Canada and in this leg, there is a need for speed. The stakes are raised as the team who reach the checkpoint in last place will be ELIMINATED from the race. The threat of elimination means every decision counts, and with next to no public transport once again the racers face a stark choice – hire a car endangering their race budgets or gamble on a car sharing which is cheaper but less reliable.
Sitting pretty are race leaders Trisha and Cathie, who on leaving checkpoint are enjoying a 25-hour lead over their nearest competitors. They are feeling confident about their advantage, and after spending big on hiring a car in the last leg, want to gamble on car sharing their way to Banff. Their strategy gets off to a tricky start when they get stuck in Watson Lake and are ghosted by a guy called Barry. As the race intensifies, Cathie feels the pressure and starts to crumble.
Disaster strikes for 25-year-old Monique who injures herself at the checkpoint causing her and her dad Ladi, a further 3-hour delay. With the elimination looming, the pair curse their bad luck and worry the accident will put their race, and Monique’s continued education, in jeopardy. Ladi then makes a vital decision that could catapult them back into the race…but there is a catch.
The threat of elimination brings out the competitive sides of married couple Zainib and Mobeen who have differing ideas about who is boss. Mobeen gets giddy formulating a new strategy – haul back RVs (a service offered in remote parts of Canada where rental companies ask tourists to relocate RVs to different branches and hire them for free) – but Zainib isn’t so sure. A stop in Edmonton to earn some cash sees Mobeen confess that he feels inferior to his wife.
Continuing to be scared of the unknown, as well as bears, Marc realises he has to face up to his fears if they are to claw back some time and get through the elimination. After a slow start the brothers grow in confidence and a chance meeting with a family gives the brothers a boost - in both the race and their new-found relationship.
Starting the elimination leg in last place, over 45 hours behind Trisha and Cathie, and with the least amount of funds of any team, are the other father and daughter team, Claudia and Kevin. The pair vow to continue their no-frills strategy but start the leg with different priorities once again, Claudia wants experiences whereas Kevin only has the race on his mind. Their situation takes an unexpected turn when they meet a Catholic Missionary called Miriam who could be the answer to their prayers.
The race is on, and the stakes are higher than ever before as the legacy of the pandemic throws extra challenges at our travelling couples who all want to be first to the finish line and win the £20,000 cash prize. As the series unfolds we will see chance encounters, cultural as well as personal revelations and some of the most awe-inspiring locations on the planet. The thrilling unpredictability of the race is sure to change the teams lives forever. The Race Across the World continues.

The race to St. John’s is underway and the five pairs leave the indigenous island of Haida Gwaii and head into the wild, navigating their way into the heart of the Yukon to the second checkpoint - Dawson City - a boom town established during the Klondike gold rush of 1898. Getting to Dawson means completing a journey of over 2000km north up one of the most isolated highways in the world, the vast wilderness only occasionally broken by the odd small settlement or truck stop. The racers will have to negotiate dense forests and vast ice fields, all with next to no public transport
Race leaders, Claudia and her dad Kevin are the first to leave with a slender 2-minute advantage over their rivals. After a budget-busting taxi ride in the previous leg, the team opt for a no-frills strategy of camping and car sharing. As the leg progresses they try and repair their relationship and make up for lost time, but the relentless journey takes its toll on Claudia who reaches breaking point.

Best friends Tricia and Cathie set off with different priorities. Self-confessed control freak Cathie is anxious about venturing into the unknown and being reliant on others, whereas ‘gung ho’ Trisha wants to get going and experience all she can before she loses her sight completely; they decide to gamble, spending big to take matters into their own hands. A job working on the shores of vines lake gives Cathie a moment to reflect on her work life back home and how the race could be the perfect tonic after a stressful few years.

To get them to Dawson City, married couple Zainib and Mobeen continue to rely on the kindness of strangers and hope to save money by ride sharing their way to the checkpoint. Through the leg, Zainib recognises the cultural pressure she faces back home and after a sheltered upbringing is yearning to break free from those expectations, and feels now is the perfect time to have an adventure and take some risks, much to Mobeen’s surprise.

Having never owned a backpack prior to setting off from Vancouver, Monique’s education continues. Father Ladi is hopeful Monique will recognise her privilege through the race but the leg gets off to a difficult start when Monique has to camp for the first time. As the pair journey through the magnificent landscapes of British Columbia, and experience the wonder of the Bear Glacier, Monique starts to see the beauty Canada has to offer.

Estranged brothers Marc and Michael leave the checkpoint in last place, and things go from bad to worse when Marc’s fear of bears causes a spat between the pair. After a slow start they try out an alternative approach to the race and focus on getting to know each other as brothers. As the team who know each other the least, can they overcome their struggles and learn to open up to each other and start thinking smarter as a team?

The race is on, and the stakes are higher than ever before as the legacy of the pandemic throws extra challenges at our travelling couples who all want to be first to the finish line and win the £20,000 cash prize. As the series unfolds we will see chance encounters, cultural as well as personal revelations and some of the most awe-inspiring locations on the planet.
