RTHK Quartet in Brussels

After the first tour to Italy and France in 2012, the RTHK Quartet shared their love of music in Europe again recently. Invited by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (ETO), the members of the RTHK Quartet (Le Hoai-nam, Selena Choi and Laurent Perrin) teamed up with guest violist Kim Bo-hyun and local sheng virtuoso Loo Sze-wang in the world’s première of Hong Kong composer Chan Hing Yan’s work in the Egmont Palace, Brussels, Belgium. The new work Two Pieces of Cantonese Music , is an arrangement of two well known Cantonese tunes for the quintet, which was played at the gala dinner of the ETO’s 50 anniversary lately. The work will have its Hong Kong première early 2016 at the RTHK Broadcasting House.
During the trip, the musicians had also visited the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, which started their activities back to 1813. You may like to know that Adolphe Sax, inventor of the saxophone, also studied there. The musicians enjoyed very much with making music with the young talents from the Conservatory.

A French Connection to the 20th Century

This was the 3rd time the RTHK Quartet performed as part of Le French May over the past few years. The four members Le Hoai-nam, Selena Choi, Elvis Chan, and Laurent Perrin worked with different artists for each concert. Back in 2011, the Quartet teamed up with French pianist, Geoffroy Couteau, in a performance of Brahms’ Quintet, Op. 34. Then they joined
the Manfred Quartet in 2013 and worked together on a performance of French composer Lekeu’s Octet for Strings. This year, the RTHK Quartet teamed up with harpist Ann Huang in the performance of another 20th century French composer’s work.On the evening of 31 May, in RTHK Studio One, the Quartet started the concert with Ravel’s String Quartet, then Cras’ Harp Quintet with harpist Ann Huang. If you have missed that, you can catch it on Live on 4 at 8pm on 17 July (Fri) on RTHK Radio 4, or listen to our online archive (within 12 months)

Concert at Lingnan University 2015

The RTHK Quartet will re-visit the Lingnan University on 24 March. After teaming up with pianist Colleen Lee last year, the four members of the Quartet, Le Hoai-nam, Selena Choi, Elvis Chan and Laurent Perrin will work with another guest musician at the campus concert this year. Andrew Ling, an outstanding local violist, will join the Quartet in the performance of Brahms’ Quintet in B minor, Op. 115 (originally written for clarinet and string quartet). The Quartet will also
play Ravel’s String Quartet in F.

Macau Trip 2015

In the late February, after the performance in the RTHK’s Chinese New Year’s Gathering Concert, the Quartet went to Macau to join the Spring Music Camp organized by the University of Macau String Orchestra (UMSO). In the 3-day coaching period, the 4 musicians shared a lot of their experience in playing chamber music with the young talents of the String orchestra. They were not only giving the students individual training sessions, but also performed at the final concert in the campus for them and other Macau audience.
Their footprints were beyond the University in Macau. As the invited guests, the RTHK Quartet had their first concert at the beautiful Macau Military Club. The audience there loved their playing of Beethoven and Schubert so much. The Quartet also enjoyed the Macau trip very much.
