Chief Executive John Lee says Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area can cooperate and create a win-win situation. He made the comments on the third day of a Greater Bay Area visit in which he and a delegation of officials and lawmakers toured the cities of Dongguan and Foshan. A government pandemic advisor, David Hui, says the current flu outbreak may have already peaked, having only lasted up to three weeks. Dr Hui also said it was not unusual for Covid infections to go up, but called on high-risk groups to get a Covid booster. Damon Pang reports:
Soco makes plea for higher minimum wage  Listenfacebook
A social welfare group wants the government to raise the minimum wage, saying it has not taken into account the living standards of workers. The Society for Community Organisation warned that the proposed level could lead to generational poverty. Soco made the plea after authorities proposed raising the hourly rate to $40 from $37.50, from May 1. The public has until the end of Monday to give their views on the overall mechanism. Violet Wong reports:
'Minimum wage should be tied to median wage'  Listenfacebook
Welfare group, Soco, says the government should introduce a mechanism to set a minimum wage, based on a percentage of the median wage in the city. The group's deputy director, Sze Lai-shan, says the minimum wage is currently 38 percent of the median wage, when it should be between 50 to 60 percent. She said this would make the rate over $53/hr. Financial Secretary Paul Chan says central government officials want to give Hong Kong more support. In his weekly blog, Chan said they wanted to help the SAR better unleash its unique advantages, which in turn would help the country's growth. The finance minister was writing about his trip to Beijing last week, as Aaron Tam reports:
US Supreme Court upholds access to abortion pill  Listenfacebook
The US Supreme Court has preserved access to a commonly-used abortion pill, ruling that the drug can remain available while a legal case continues. It comes after the Supreme Court, which has a conservative majority, overturned Roe v Wade last June, ending the nationwide guarantee to abortion and giving US states the power to ban the procedure. RTHK’s Washington correspondent, Barry Wood, told Samantha Butler the abortion pill, mifepristone, has been on the market in the US since the year 2000. He described the legal case surrounding it as “complicated”:
