An educator says local schools should be given more leeway over complying with mainland patriotic education rules, which are currently being drafted. Mervyn Cheung, who chairs the Hong Kong Education Policy Concern Organisation, says a lot of work has already been done on patriotic education in local schools, but they started late and are behind their mainland counterparts in developing curriculum and guidelines in this area. A veteran engineer says a lack of experience in handling concrete could explain why honeycomb-shaped cavities were found at a University of Hong Kong campus re-development project. Greg Wong made the comments after the university confirmed the construction defects, which the Buildings Department said did not pose any immediate structural danger. Dr Mike Kwan from the University of Hong Kong issued the warning following the admission of two very young girls to Tuen Mun Hospital on Monday, after they were allegedly fed candy containing the drug.
