Chief Executive John Lee says Hong Kong will comply with the patriotic education requirements imposed by Beijing, whether or not a relevant law ultimately applies to the SAR. The draft bill being considered is aimed at promoting patriotism in the country, especially among the younger generations. Wendy Wong reports:

An educator says local schools should be given more leeway over complying with mainland patriotic education rules, which are currently being drafted. Mervyn Cheung, who chairs the Hong Kong Education Policy Concern Organisation, says a lot of work has already been done on patriotic education in local schools, but they started late and are behind their mainland counterparts in developing curriculum and guidelines in this area. But he told Samantha Butler that feedback from parents and students had so far been quite positive:

John Lee has announced that the 59-strong government rescue team sent to Turkey after February's devastating earthquake will be the first recipients of the Chief Executive's Award for Exemplary Performance. He introduced the award in his inaugural policy address last year. Hailey Yip reports:

A veteran engineer says a lack of experience in handling concrete could explain why honeycomb-shaped cavities were found at a University of Hong Kong campus re-development project. Greg Wong made the comments after the university confirmed the construction defects, which the Buildings Department said did not pose any immediate structural danger. Photos of the cavities were first shared on social media by Jason Poon, who blew the whistle on shoddy work on an MTR station development. Wong, the former president of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, spoke to Frank Yung:

An associate professor in paediatrics and adolescent medicine says cannabis use by children can have a serious impact on their mental and physical well being. Dr Mike Kwan from the University of Hong Kong issued the warning following the admission of two very young girls to Tuen Mun Hospital on Monday, after they were allegedly fed candy containing the drug. They are now said to be in a stable condition, as Hailey Yip reports:

Paediatric doctor, Mike Kwan, says cannabis is not a licensed drug in Hong Kong and it should be kept away from children. He told Hailey Yip that parents should educate their children on the dangers of cannabis use:

Manufacturers say they plan to diversify their markets to counter a more than year-long drop in trade. This came after the SAR's import and export figures for May recorded the most significant declines in four months. Ada Au reports:

Shares in New World Development have finished slightly higher while NWS Holdings surged more than 11 percent on Tuesday, after the developer announced that the private investment company of its chairman and his family had offered to buy back the stock of its holding company in a deal worth up to $35.5 billion. Many South Koreans from Wednesday will become one or even two years younger, thanks to a new law that will standardise how age is calculated in the country. Traditionally, Koreans are considered a year old at the time of birth and gain a year every January 1. The international system calculates a person's age from zero, with a year added every birthday.
