A unionist lawmaker says the government should do more to attract local workers to the transport industry. Lam Chun-sing made the comment after Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung said drivers and other workers from outside of Hong Kong could begin working in the transport industry here in the final quarter of this year. A scheme to import thousands of workers for the sector will begin accepting applications next week. Under it, up to 6,300 non-local staff can be recruited to join the aviation industry, while the quota for the public light bus and coach trade is set at 1,700. Lam told Janice Wong that the government should strike a balance between importing workers and protecting local employees:

The head of Hong Kong's Catholic Diocese says he was in disbelief after learning on Sunday that he would become a cardinal. Bishop Stephen Chow was one of 21 clerics that Pope Francis elevated to cardinal during a service at the Vatican. As Altis Wong reports, the cardinal-to-be has vowed to continue praying for reconciliation in society:

A theologian and associate professor at the Chinese University says while Bishop Stephen Chow is not the first to be appointed a cardinal from the Hong Kong Diocese, the move implies that the SAR will play a larger role in the Vatican going forward. Professor Kung Lap-yan also said the move is a continuation of what was achieved during Chow's historic visit to Beijing in April.
