The Observatory says the standby signal number one will remain in force until at least 3 pm on Thursday, with Super Typhoon Saola maintaining a distance of more than 300 kilometres from Hong Kong. The signal was raised at 5.40pm on Wednesday, as Jacqueline Guico reports:

The government has been urged to provide more mental health support for the homeless. It comes after the number of registered street sleepers under the Social Welfare Department doubled over the past nine years. Hong Kong Shue Yan University and an NGO, ImpactHK, interviewed 89 homeless people this year. Bess Lam, an assistant professor of psychology at the university, told Anne Chan that almost half of the respondents suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder:

A charity that helps the homeless says it is starting an outreach podcast, so people can hear the stories of the homeless and have more respect and engagement with them. Deep Ng, senior programme manager in rehabilitation and whole person development at ImpactHK, says it is important for the community to hear the stories and the suffering of the homeless. He told Samantha Butler that if the government had a 'homeless-friendly' policy, it would help improve their mental health:

Psychiatric outpatients at Eastern Hospital now have the option of doing their rehabilitation or therapy courses remotely. Using the Hospital Authority's HA Go app, patients and caregivers can log in and attend classes online. The hospital's Department of Psychiatry says it is targeting those who are in a stable condition, with possibly limited mobility or a tight schedule. But as the head of the Psychiatry department, Dr Anna Wu, told Kimmy Lau, a good internet connection was also vital:

Chinese University researchers say the rate of short-sightedness among Hong Kong children is worrying. The university's department of medicine made the statement after it conducted a study between 2015 and 2021, involving more than 20,000 children aged six to eight. While a quarter of the children were found to be short-sighted in 2015, this fell to just over 23 percent between 2016 and 2019, before jumping to a record high 36 percent by 2021. Ophthalmology and visual science associate professor, Jason Yam, told Elvis Yu that the lack of outdoor activities and excessive screen time during the Covid pandemic was to blame:

Kowloon Motor Bus says 2,000 of its buses, or about half of its fleet, could be partly powered by solar energy by the end of this year. The franchised bus operator has been installing thin-film solar cells on bus roofs, generating electricity to ignite the engine and power all electrical systems on board. Violet Wong reports:

The government can do more to help drivers and transport operators transition to electric vehicles, from tax breaks to drawing from funds raised by its Green Bond. China's largest private property developer, Country Garden, has reported a record loss in the first half of 2023, as real-estate woes drag on the world's second largest economy. Its shares closed down 3.3 percent at 88 HK cents ahead of the earnings announcement on Wednesday night. Sean Kennedy reports:

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly says London wants to have a pragmatic relationship with Beijing, but warned it would remain "clear-eyed" about the areas where the two countries disagree.
