On Monday’s Backchat: After Hong Kong’s first national security trial ends in a nine year jail term, what does this case tell us about how the national security law is being enforced?
Critics say that the sentence imposed on Tong Ying-kit for riding a motorcycle past police lines carrying one of the most popular slogans from the 2019 protests may pave the way for even longer prison sentences for some of the many others currently awaiting trial on national security charges. But one Beijing scholar said the sentence was “rather lenient” and the government has furiously rejected foreign criticism of the court verdict.
Meanwhile, Article 23 legislation seems to be moving up the agenda after Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi told Secretary for Justice Teresa Cheng Hong Kong should prioritise enacting more national security legislation and also push ahead with judicial reform. So what should we make of these latest developments?
