Wristbands for home isolation as HK records 2,863 cases  Listenfacebook
The Secretary for Health, Lo Chung-mau, says from Friday, people infected with Covid-19 and under home isolation orders will need to wear electronic wristbands to ensure they do not flout regulations and leave their homes prematurely. He says authorities are also looking into turning the blue QR codes of infected patients into red on their LeaveHomeSafe app as a further safeguard against non-compliance. Priscilla Ng reports:

A prominent virologist has warned of "threats on the horizon", saying the current Covid infection wave has not peaked. Professor Malik Peiris from the University of Hong Kong says the highly-transmissble Omicron BA.5 variant is circulating here and has lead to increased hospitalisations overseas. He welcomed plans to introduce electronic wristbands for Covid patients isolating at home, saying such technological approaches could possibly be used in future, if home quarantine were to replace hotel quarantine for inbound travellers. Streets in Macau have been largely empty, with all casinos and other non-essential businesses shut from Monday for a week-long suspension amid a Covid outbreak. The SAR has reported 59 new cases, raising the total in its current wave to past 1,500. Frank Yung reports:

The transport commissioner, Rosanna Law, says plans to allow no more than two mobile devices on a vehicle's dashboard should not affect the needs of taxi drivers. Law says the taxi trade supports the idea, as Timmy Sung reports:
High demands for poverty working group  Listenfacebook
A community group has called on the government to set concrete goals in the fight against poverty, saying current relief measures are not strong enough. The group known as Poverty Concern Platform surveyed 388 people and found around half of them were not satisfied with the government's anti-poverty efforts, and more than 60 percent said they hoped the new administration could do better. A member of the group, Kenny Ng, told Kelly Yu what he expected of the newly-formed anti-poverty working group led by Chief Secretary Eric Chan:

Britain's governing Conservative party has announced the rules for the race to replace Boris Johnson both as party leader and prime minister. Contenders need the support of at least 20 parliamentary colleagues, and the first ballot will take place on Wednesday. Voting will continue until two candidates remain, and the prime minister will be named on September 5. So far, 11 candidates have thrown their hat into the ring. RTHK’s London correspondent Gavin Grey said tax was a dominant issue. He began by explaining the selection rules to Samantha Butler:

The Sri Lankan speaker of parliament says it will reconvene on Friday, before electing a new president the following Wednesday. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa agreed to step down following a wave of protests against his government's handling of the economic crisis. The prime minister and the cabinet are also expected to step down, paving the way for an all-party interim government. Over the weekend, protesters stormed both leaders' official residences. Demonstrators are still occupying the presidential palace and prime ministerial residence.
