      In this programme, Dr Helen Czerski investigates the extraordinary science behind the sounds we are familiar with and the sounds that we normally cannot hear. She begins by exploring the simplest of ideas: what is a sound? At the Palace of Westminster, Helen carries out measurements using lasers to reveal how the most famous bell in the world - "Big Ben" produces its distinct sound. With soprano singer Lesley Garrett CBE, Helen explores the secrets of human singing voice that can produce a range of sounds far greater than any man-made musical instrument. She also discovers the hidden world of sounds that lie beyond the range of human hearing at the summit of Stromboli, one of Europe's most active volcanoes.

      For decades, some have suspected that there might be others out there, intelligent beings capable of communicating with us, even visiting our world. It might sound like science fiction, but today scientists from across the globe are scouring the universe for signals from extraterrestrials. In 2006, astronomers discovered an enigmatic signal from space, known as a fast radio burst. Explanations ranged from colliding neutron stars to communication signals from an extremely advanced civilisation. On the other hand, researchers have been devoting much of their time searching for radio signals from Tabby's Star, the most mysterious star in our galaxy. Will the ‘Dyson Sphere’ mystery be solved or remain as an enigma?

      Traditionally, the sense of smell is deemed vastly inferior to vision. But in the past two decades scientists have begun to realize how powerful our noses are. How do we perceive smells? What messages do they contain? How do they influence our brain and behavior? In finding answers to these questions, we meet with scientists, people who lose olfaction and representatives from the fragrance industry to discover that our noses are directly wired to the deepest, oldest parts of our brains, where feelings originate and memories are stored. What is more, biologists have found smell receptors throughout the whole human body.

      不少人以为专注力失调及过度活跃症(ADHD)并非真有其事,只是由于家长管教不善、子女顽皮所致。英国政治喜剧演员Rory Bremner一直怀疑自己患有ADHD,他将于本集带领观众寻找ADHD的医学根据,发现患者的脑部构造原来与别不同。他亦会进行诊断并服药,了解ADHD的治疗原理。最后他更了解到部分患者冒险冲动的行为,其实可能有如清除地雷,为大众辨认危险。

      Many people remain sceptical of the existence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), blaming it on naughty children or bad parenting. The award-winning political impressionist Rory Bremner, who has suspected he has the condition, in this film looks for solid scientific evidence that ADHD does exist as a distinct disorder as there are clear differences in the brains of people with ADHD. Rory then goes for a diagnosis and tries out medication for ADHD. Finally he finds out why this condition exists at all - some scientists believe it may have helped society by providing risk-takers who - like minesweepers - identify dangers and map out boundaries, to the benefit of the rest of us.

      For the first time, astrophysicists can detect extra-terrestrial neutrinos in the ice of the South Pole. Neutrinos are the most common elementary particles and at the same time the most mysterious. As these particles are invisible to us, we cannot check if they have a mass. Also, they are not electrically charged, and rarely interact with other matter. But for scientists, each of the tiny neutrinos is a potential messenger that carries direct information about its origin in space.
