    英语篇#12 Nobel Lecture - Malala Yousafzai

    鸣谢诺贝尔基金会Nobel Foundation提供马拉拉演说录音。

    Summary of the Speech:

    - Malala was confident but humble. She gave recognition to Kailash Satyarthi (another Nobel Peace Prize winner, an Indian for fighting against child labour).

    - She mentioned her terrifying experience when the Taliban took over her hometown.

    -           mentioned her voice represents 66 million girls who are deprived of education (many children in the world still do not have education)

    - She shared a story of her friend who wanted to be a doctor but was forced to marry and gave birth at 14.

    - She stressed that basic education is not enough.

    - She will use the Nobel Prize money to provide quality education everywhere in the world, especially for girls.

    - At the end of the speech, she urged world leaders to help.

     

    Some Important Parts of the Speech:

    “But things did not remain the same. When I was in Swat, which was a place of tourism and beauty, it suddenly changed into a place of terrorism恐怖主义. I was just ten when more than 400 schools were destroyed. Women were fogged. People were killed. And our beautiful dreams turned into nightmares. Education went from being a right to being a crime.”

    英语篇#10 Resignation Address in 1974 - Richard Nixon

    Summary of the Speech:

    - Nixon concluded that he no longer had "a strong enough political base in the Congress" to make it possible for him to complete his term of office.

    - He had never been a quitter, and to leave office before the end of his term "is abhorrent 深恶痛绝 to every instinct 本能 in my body.”

    - He mentioned he must put the interests of America first.

     

    Some Important Parts of the Speech:

    “I would have preferred to carry through to the finish whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so. But the interest of the Nation must always come before any personal considerations.”

     

    - Agony (肉体或精神的)极度痛苦

    My aunt has cancer and she has been in agony.

     

    - Unanimously 一致地

    The Board voted unanimously to terminate his three-year contract.

    - Urge 敦促; 驱策

    We were urged to wash our hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs.
