Teacher misconduct cases / Animal abuse

On Monday’s Backchat, we’re looking into teacher misconduct.

Some lawmakers have called on the government to implement more stringent checks on teachers as figures show that there were 304 professional misconduct cases involving teachers last year, three times the number in 2022. Out of those, 71 were struck off, 38 got reprimand letters and 149 received written warnings.
Some of the more serious cases involved child abuse, theft, and teachers having inappropriate relationships or improper physical contact with students. And while the Education Bureau checks teachers’ criminal records every three years, critics argue that this is not enough.
After 9:30, we discuss animal abuse, amidst a spate of suspected cruelty cases.

US tariffs on China / Lithium battery safety

    主持人:Tony Sabine and Rainbow Leung

On Tuesday’s Backchat, we discuss the Trump administration’s decision to impose tariffs on Chinese goods and the impending impact on Hong Kong.

The city’s stock market opened lower on the first trading day in the Year of the Snake after US President Donald Trump ordered levies of 10 percent on goods exported from China.
And whilst the measure didn’t come as a surprise, businesses are taking steps to protect themselves from the fallout by adjusting their shipping dates.
Some hope that Hong Kong will benefit from the trade upheaval, allowing the city to pivot closer to the mainland while finding new opportunities in untapped markets. So how will these new measures play out? We’ll find out.
After 9:45, we speak to an electrical engineer on the dangers of lithium, as South Korean investigators suspect that’s a portable charger might have been the cause of a fire on a Hong Kong-bound flight.
