In 1890, Eugene Schieffelin released sixty European starlings in New York City. Today, 85 million of their descendants swarm across North America. And they’re not alone. Invasive species are on the march around the world. But are these “invaders” really the villains?

In this episode of Human Footprint, Shane investigates how these Strangers In Paradise become “invasive” in the first place… and what we can do about it.

Shane’s journey begins in Florida, where he joins bounty hunter Donna Kalil on a Burmese python hunt. Pet pythons have found a perfect home in the Everglades, and they’re spreading fast. Meanwhile, Asian carp have overrun waterways in the Mississippi River basin, threatening livelihoods and creating cultural traditions (or perhaps extreme sports) like the Redneck Fishing Tournament. Delicious but bony, carp are tough for the American palate to embrace. In Nevada, Shane watches wild horses fleeing helicopters in a government roundup and discovers how the mythology of the West turned one invasive species into an American icon. And on Oahu – an island chock-full of biological invaders – Shane hunts wild pigs and helps prepare a ceremonial feast.

As invasive species spread, so does our footprint on the planet. Even if we could somehow remove them all, the ecosystems they’ve transformed won’t be the same. But we do have the power to change the future. We just have to decide: in the world we want to live in, what belongs?

We call them Man’s Best Friend. But there’s more to our ancient alliance than friendship. Humans have transformed dogs from their wolf ancestors into a dazzling array of breeds, from beautiful to bizarre. And just as we’ve left our Human Footprint on dogs, they’ve left their pawprint on us… and the world we both share.

Shane’s journey begins above the Arctic Circle, where the power and endurance of Inuit sled dogs allow a traditional way of life to thrive. But it’s not just brawn that makes dogs ideal allies – it’s brains. Shane visits service dogs in training and elite canine “dancers” in performance to see how dogs understand us in a way no other species can – an ability that allowed the first dogs to flourish in humankind’s shadow. And as Shane sees in Mexico City, hundreds of millions of dogs still live this way – not wild, but not pets either. At the other extreme are the purebred competitors of the Westminster Dog Show. By studying their DNA after centuries of selective breeding, researchers are discovering the genetic causes of cancer… in dogs and in humans.

Our relationship with dogs is a true collaboration, millennia in the making. Dogs really do know us – and like all great friends, they teach us things about ourselves that we wouldn’t discover any other way. They thrive on the streets and inside our homes, outnumbering wolves three thousand to one… because in the age of humans, there’s no wrong way to be a dog.

There’s a killer inside us – our ancestors were hunters before they were even humans. And hunting isn’t just subsistence – it’s deeply ingrained in our culture. As our population has grown and our technologies flourished, modern humans have become the most efficient and ubiquitous hunters the world has ever known: the planet’s new Top Predator.

To understand why we hunt, Shane visits biologist and hunter Ryan Long. Butchering a deer at Ryan’s home in Idaho, Shane rediscovers a connection to his food that he didn’t know he was missing. In the Chesapeake Bay, duck hunter Ramsey Russell shows Shane how a thriving market and a literal arms race nearly ended an epic wildlife spectacle, spurring new laws to regulate hunting. We’ve brought our killing prowess to the high seas, driving whales to the brink of extinction – and altering the ocean’s chemistry along the way. Shane’s own research shows that we’re changing the course of evolution by targeting elephants for their ivory and creating populations where tuskless females are commonplace. Finally, by waging war on other top predators, like wolves in the American West, we’re discovering that humans can’t replace wild killers in our ecosystems.

Hunting has always been part of our story, and it probably always will be. The difference between us and our Paleolithic ancestors is that now we know what we’re capable of. Armed with that knowledge, we can channel our instincts more thoughtfully, leave room for wild hunters, and give new meaning to the title “Top Predator.”
