After 16 years of civil war, the Holy Roman Empire laid in ruins. The religious hatred between Catholics and Protestants became a power struggle between European nations. Danish armies in 1625 and then Swedish troops five years later entered into the struggle against Germany by attacking from the north. Hundreds of thousands of Scottish, Italian, English, and Swiss mercenaries came to pick over the remains of the spoils. There were already several million victims. France, the most populous country in Europe, was about to be devoured by the murderous madness. It wanted to prevent its Swedish ally from collapsing during its campaign into the ruins of Germany.
At this time, Peter Hagendorf is still fighting in the Swedish army. After the Battle of Nördlingen, which the Swedish army loses, he is taken prisoner by the Spanish army, which is part of the Imperial army. And so, Hagendorf switches sides again and is back fighting for the Imperialists. Hagendorf meets AnnaMaria Buchler, his second wife, and moves with her and the army in the direction of Paris. The Imperialists have the firm intention of conquering the city, but they fail and are forced to retreat by King Louis XIII.
Fr. Joseph and Cardinal Richelieu play their part in the victory by recruiting 40,000 new soldiers, seemingly out of nowhere. Richelieu is already very ill at this stage and wants to name Fr. Joseph as his successor. However, Fr. Joseph dies suddenly in December 1638.
In Germany too, the war rages on. One of the bloodiest battles in the Thirty Years' War takes place in 1636 in Wittstock, at which, contrary to expectations, the Swedish army vanquishes the Imperialists. In the Convent of the Angels, near Magdeburg, we meet the now grown Anna Margaretha von Haugwitz. The convent is searched by the Swedish army and its commander Carl Gustaf Wrangel. It is here that Anna and Carl Gustaf meet for the first time. At Carl Gustaf's side is the widow Baroness of Löwenstein, a friend and confidante of the Swedish army. She takes pity on Anna and decides to take care of her. Anna accompanies the Baroness of Löwenstein and Carl Gustaf from then on and moves with them from camp to camp througout the war. Two weeks before the death of the Baroness, Anna Margaretha and Carl Gustaf marry.
