In its annual report, the Department of Health revealed some improvement in the 2023/24 academic year compared to the year before, but cautioned that the situation still lags behind pre-Covid levels.

The latest data from the department indicates that 2.8 percent of secondary students surveyed reported having thoughts of self-harm, with 1.3 percent admitting to having attempted suicide.

The report also looked into other areas of young people's health, including the amount of time they spent on electronic devices for entertainment. Over 80 percent of secondary students are said to spend over two hours a day on their devices, with some doctors warning that this could worsen their eyesight.
